Youngman’s new single, Sorry, is a cover of Monsta Boy’s UK garage classic so we decided to find out what his all time favourite cover versions are…
1. Mark Ronson ft. Amy Winehouse – “Valerie” (The Zutons)
I seem to remember this cover being released relatively close to the original and both were huge. Amy’s vocals just add a whole new twist on a great song.
2. The Fugees – “Killing Me Softly” (Roberta Flack)
Ah man. One of my favourite records of all time.I remember at the time no one from my generation even knew the original but it had such a massive impact regardless. That’s what makes a great cover for me, it connects with those who know the original and those who are finding the song for the first time.
3. James Blake – Limit To Your Love (Feist)
This cover really launch James Blake into mainstream. Such a great song and he definitely made it his own stripping it back and adding on those dub elements. Seen him do this live a few times and it goes off!
4. Aretha Franklin – Respect (Otis Redding)
Absolutely classic cover! Love how the meaning of this records is flipped on its head and she added the “R-E-S-P-E-C-T section and made it her own…
5. Youngman – Sorry (Monsta Boy)
I grew up listening to UK Garage and Monsta Boy’s classic was always one of my favourites. We were in the studio vibing to some chords and I started singing some of “Sorry” over it and everyone went crazy so we decided to develop it. Vibes!
